Architectural Philosophy

My mission is to enhance the life of others through the creation of comfortable, safe and heartwarming architectural spaces. I believe the design process is exciting when it combines working from my life and yours, my references and yours, my imagination and yours. Spending time discovering ‘your story’ is fundamental to the outcome of a building that is styled individually and makes a positive impact in the surroundings. I believe building design is as important to the user as it is to the observer, and how the structure sits within the landscape is fundamental to the total experience of the building. "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." (Steve Jobs, 1955-2011)

Background

I have lived in Dunsborough with my family since 2009, where I have been involved in residential and community building projects, as well as landscape design and maintenance with our family business - Hedges and Edges. Handling the soil and taming the plants has given me an insight into the challenges and opportunities of landscaping, and the importance of holistic design. Having a family helps me understand the practicalities of everyday life, and how space, size, and affordability can be achieved without design compromise.

Education

I graduated as an architect from University of Natal, Durban in 1989. After receiving my Bachelor of Architecture, I spent my early years working in architectural firms in Johannesburg and Cape Town and then moved to Dublin, Ireland. As I have always been interested in historical architecture, I decided to study Architectural Conservation. In 2001 I graduated from University College Dublin with a Masters in Urban and Building Conservation. This equipped me to work on restorations of protected structures (listed buildings) and also provided a precedent on which to base new buildings. At this time I was working at Brian O’Halloran and Associates, who were the architects for the K-Club, a Ryder Cup golf course in County Kildare. I was made an associate and worked there for ten years before deciding to immigrate to Australia. I am a member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) and a registered architect with the Architects Board of Western Australia.

Services

If you are interested in discussing your design needs with me please contact me. I provide an obligation free initial consultation, and I can meet you whenever and wherever is convenient for you. After the initial consultation, we will work together to finalize your brief, consider the site opportunities and constraints and prepare a sketch design. Design development, including liaison with other design team members and council planners (if required) will continue. We will agree a final design and I will prepare drawings for Development application to the Shire or City Council. When the design is approved by them, working drawings will commence for builder’s to price. After the tender stage is completed, the builder has been appointed, and construction has commenced, I will continue to monitor all aspects of design, and provide alterations to drawings if required.
You can avail of any part of this service, or a complete service, depending on your specific requirements. As an independent professional, with low overheads, I am able to provide competitive rates.
